The first failure this week was the old cordless phone. I thought it was just the battery needing replacement after all these years, but a new battery didn't fix the problem. I suppose that is Taps for the phone.
This is something you don't buy often. If I remember I waited to buy this phone as it was one of the first to be a 900 MhHz phone, a new design at the time. Looking at models now, it seems there have been two advances since then, with DECT (digital) being the new standard. Of course, everything is smaller - including thinner handsets and tiny base stations.
One annoyance though, all the phone stations now stand on end. I like a phone to lie down and be nice and flat on a table. now they all stand up and say "Hey, here's a phone!" Does anyone really like this? but that's the only choice these days, so what can you do.
This is also one of those products where all the models look the same, so I have no idea what to look for. Guess I'll surf Amazon for customer reviews. Anyone have one of these with an opinion? The plus side is they all come with answering machines, so I'll probably be able to dump Verizon's Call Answering service and save a bunch of money.
Of course I can't buy a cordless phone ever without thinking of my Mother. I got her a cordless handset phone for her place a while back. Let's just say she's one of those people that often 'doesn't get' technology. She always stood next to the bast station to use the thing. This includes actually putting the cordless phone down to go into the other room and get something. Gotta love it.

I'm a fan of the big, heavy Unidens. You can still get those at Radio Shack. Since I have to type when I'm on the phone, I need one I can jam between my ear and shoulder and be able to keep it there hands free. I can't do that will those little tiny jobbers.
Then again, I may be totally wrong. Looking through Uniden's site, I don't see anything like what I have.
I have the call answering stuff, to but mainly because it answers the phone when I'm on it. Any answering machine on my end wouldn't be able to do that. And I find call waiting terribly rude (and difficult to handle when on a conference call).
I do see one with a normal flat layout, though.
Indeed - none of these phones on display in the store were as thick as my current old handset, which means nestling it between your head and shoulder may be tough to do. I think they all assume you'll plug a headphone into it, as they all have built in belt clips. I do like the 'normal phone' base station in the link you posted.
Also have to watch out for 'things you didn't think you need' - like Pansonic keeps the address book in the base, while other models keep a number you added in just that one headset, not necessarily syncing with the other headsets...
